Identification of Shoreline Types for a Freshwater Lake using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)

PROJECT DETAILS
CLIENT
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC)
CATEGORIE
Shoreline preparedness and response
LOCATION
Experimental Lakes Area, Ontario, Canada
PROJECT TIMELINE
2017 – 2018
Objective
Identify freshwater lake shoreline types (i.e., shoreline segmentation) utilizing an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and develop an algorithm that allows for the identification of shoreline types using multispectral reflectance and sediment size.
Services provided
- Project and data management for the three phases of the project:
- UAV overflight;
- Algorithm development;
- Validation of shoreline types.
- Assessment of whether the algorithm reliably produces comparable results to those achieved by a technical expert and any differences in the amount of time needed to identify shoreline types using the two approaches.
